2 get the nu abbr’s?
(are you ready to get the new abbreviations?)
In 1994 Visit
America Inc created and distributed a small booklet covering about 1500
abbreviations used in international communication, mostly in tourism. Amazing how dated some of the abbreviations
in this booklet now sound:
“DM=German
Mark, SASE=Self-addressed, stamped envelope, RUTX=regarding your telex”, to
name a few. On the other hand there are still a lot of abbreviations valid in
our age of “Text Messaging” and short e-mails. Look at the old “WYSIWYG=what
you see is what you get” or at “RSVP=please respond” or at “SBU=stop bothering
us”, abbreviations we can still use!
The use of
abbreviations has changed over these past 14 years. In tourism we still use
PAX, NA, PNR, DOC, DOB, CXL, TBA and others daily, but today’s hot
abbreviations and acronyms are mostly personal. The vast majority of “msgs” are between young persons and therefore the style and
purpose has changed. Here a few samples and their sources. Apply them and you
will feel hot or cool, depending your age!
